Creating a new database

FlyingBit Password Keeper new databaseThe first step will be creating a new database where FlyingBit Password Keeper stores all entered data. To do it, select the File->New… item in the main menu or click the corresponding toolbar button. You can also use the hotkey combination (Ctrl+N). Specify the name of the database file in the new file selection dialog box. Then the program will ask you to specify the name and the password of the database and also the algorithm the storage will be encrypted with. How securely your data is protected depends on what master password you select. The master password must be as complicated as possible, but keep in mind that you have to remember it. To finish the process, click the “OK” button.

FlyingBit Password Keeper Login WindowYou can also create a new database from the authentication dialog box. To do it, open the database manager by clicking the “Manage database list…” link. Click the “New…” button and go through the steps described above. After you create a database, it will appear in the list. Click the “OK” button to close the manager. Now you can select you database from the drop-down list in the authentication dialog box, enter the password and log in.

FlyingBit Password Keeper Main Window You will see the main window of the program after that. It consists of four main areas. The main menu of the program is at the top of the window, together with the toolbar. The passcard tree with the quick search field is located on the left. The object list is located on the right. Its contents depend on the group or passcard selected in the tree. You can see the note area and the status bar at the bottom. By default, the program creates several groups you can use.

To create a new group, switch to the root node with the name of your database in the passcard tree and select the Edit->Add->Add Group (Ins) item in the main menu or click the “Add” button on the toolbar. Specify the name of the group and click the “OK” button in the new dialog box.

FlyingBit Password Keeper New Passcard WindowNow you should add a passcard to the created group. A passcard is a key notion in the program so we will dwell on it. A passcard is a set of fields containing your data. Well, it can be passwords, usernames, etc. Moreover, a passcard may have a lifetime. It is due to the fact that the authentication data you store may become outdated. If you need to change your account password every month, you create a passcard and set its lifetime to one month. After this period expires, the outdated passcard will be marked with a special character thus reminding you about the necessity to change the password.

To create a new passcard, you should activate the group where it will be stored and select Edit->Add->Add Passcard (Ins) in the main menu or click the “Add” button on the toolbar. After that you will see the dialog box where you can edit the passcard. Here you can specify the passcard name, its lifetime and also the autofill string. See the corresponding section for details about autofilling.

Adding data to a passcard

You should select the passcard you are filling in the passcard tree and select Edit->Add->Add Item (Ins) in the main menu or click the “Add” button on the toolbar. Select the type of data you want to add in the new dialog box. In case the selected field has the “password” type, you can create it using the built-in password generator by clicking the button to the right from the data field. It is also possible to change the icon that will be used to display the field in the passcard. After you finish entering data, click the “OK” button. Now the created field will appear in the object list of the main window.

Using Data

FlyingBit Password Keeper Passcard Field MenuA right click on the field will open the menu with operations. For example, you can copy the data from the field to the clipboard in order to use it in other applications, edit it or remove it from the passcard. To copy the data to the clipboard in an easier way, just click the field with the middle mouse button. If you copy data to the clipboard, it is automatically cleared after the specified time interval for security purposes. Of course, the most convenient method is to automatically fill out forms instead of copying and pasting the data. And if the type of the entered field is URL, you can follow it right from the list of fields by just clicking it.

Saving a database

Now you can save all the changes made to the database. To do it just click the “Save” button on the toolbar or select the File->Save (Ctrl+S) item in the main menu. The data will be encrypted and saved to the file on the disk.
